As an effective form of weed deterrence, thick and sturdy cardboard can be a great addition to the vegetable garden. With its remarkable malleability and durability, weeds are unable to burrow through and are thereby kept at bay. Additionally, it prevents sunlight from permeating the soil, subsequently prohibiting weed seeds from germinating.

To suppress weeds from sprouting up and causing trouble within your garden bed, plot a layer of cardboard atop the soil. It’s important to completely cover up the dirt with no parts or parcels visible to ensure that it succeeds at its task. If you feel like it’s necessary, you may even use rocks or bricks to further weight down the cardboard.

To eradicate any established weeds and impede further germination, it is essential to keep the cardboard in the ground for multiple weeks. As soon as the vegetation disruption is satisfactorily handled, you can take out the cardboard and use it for composting.

Every few months, those with severe weed overgrowth may have to reapply the cardboard solution. Fortunately though, the average garden should not require recurrent attention in this regard.
